Tailor-made training programs for Damen clients worldwide

The maritime industry is characterized by long lifetimes of assets. The ships that we are building today will remain in service for another 30 years. The ships of today are the most complex and innovative ships that have ever sailed the seven seas.
|

So, how does a client make sure that the vessel’s crew is capable to operate these ships in a safe and efficient manner? This is where the Damen training department, within Damen Services, comes in. Several training programs can be offered to clients, varying from an operational training of several days to multi-year maintenance or shipbuilding courses. These programs are tailor-made to the need of the client and can be offered at any Damen location or at the client’s premises worldwide.

Recently, Damen has delivered a buoy tending vessel (UV3911) to the port Authority of Jamaica. The vessel replaces a 40-year old vessel and Damen Services was contracted to prepare the crew for operating the “Jamaica III”. Imagine the innovations that have come to the market in 40 years time: electronically controlled engines, automation systems, modern navigation and communication system and Dynamic Positioning.

Developing such a training program requires close consultation with the client and cooperation with equipment manufacturers. It also involves finding the right trainers who are capable to transfer their knowledge. And finally, such a project has to be managed financially and it requires excellent internal and external stakeholder management. In other words, never a dull moment!

Beaching tests for amphibious landing craft
|
|
|
Sailing through the surf zone near a beach during an amphibious landing can be a dangerous operation, particularly because sailing with a landing craft through following breaking waves can pose challenges to the course keeping ability and/or surf riding that can lead to large uncontrolled roll and/or pitch motions.
|
Model tests are the only viable option to assess the safety of an amphibious operation for now. At the same time, a model test of an amphibious operation is very different from an ordinary seakeeping test, due to the changing bathymetry and changing waves over the run and the influence of the operator during each approach.
|
|
|
|
Navies are currently modernising their amphibious forces, leading to high performance landing craft, which have much higher speeds than traditional landing craft. These more advanced vessels may have different behaviour while travelling through the surf zone. This potentially leads to a higher need for model testing these operations.
|
|
|
Given their specifics, MARIN has never developed a standard for these tests. To enable MARIN to offer technically sound and cost-effective amphibious testing capabilities to its clients, we decided to perform a testing campaign to develop a new approach. The objectives of these tests were to:
- Develop a cost-effective, removable beach structure that could be built in either the Offshore Basin or the Shallow Water Basin.
- Get a better understanding of the relevant aspects of sailing through the surf near a beach.
- Develop a standard approach for amphibious tests.
A removable beach was designed and constructed in the Offshore Basin at MARIN. A large beach structure is needed to obtain a beach slope that is still somewhat steeper than many beaches around the North Sea. With this each, we tested different aspects to assess the safety of these operations. The results form the basis of a new standard that is being developed. This standard will be fine-tuned, based on the experiences of future test campaigns.

Deck reinforcement for extreme loading conditions
|
|
|
For one of our long-term clients BigLift Shipping received the request for the transportation of a 3000 mton heavy carousel. BigLift proposed the P-Type for this project. The cargo weight exceeded the P-Type’s structural deck capacity, therefore deck reinforcements had to be made to make this transportation feasible. In addition, very strict deck deflection criteria were applicable to guarantee carousel operations during loading and discharging.

In order to meet these requirements BigLift designed a hatch cover support system, that consists of three large steel constructions that act as supports under the upper deck hatch covers. In this way part of the vertical load was guided to the tween deck supports in the hold. The system had been engineered and fabricated in such a way that it can easily be stored in a set of containers for mobilization for other projects as well.
The project has recently been executed and the support system performed to the full satisfaction. A good example of engineering work that resulted in a nice piece of equipment!
